At Travers & Associates, Aviation Insurance is a Family Matter
ST. LOUIS (April 2009) -- With a history seated in World War II and continuing into the new millennium, Travers and Associates is a family business that is dedicated to keeping pilots safe and secure. Captain Bob Travers, the founder of Travers and Associates, began the aviation insurance agency after flying planes in the military and then commercially for Ozark Airlines. The entire family was steeped in aviation from birth and has a unique understanding of the needs of pilots and companies in the industry.
"Our dad grew up flying airplanes with his dad, and we grew up flying airplanes with our dad and grandpa," said Chris Travers, sales manager for Travers and Associates and a third generation aviation insurance agent for the company. "We are licensed pilots and have an ingrained understanding of the industry. The Travers family is truly dedicated to providing quality insurance to aviation professionals."
Bob Travers learned to fly in the Navy prior to WWII. He began his career flying a Boeing Stearman, moved on to a Beech 18 and then became captain of the PBY Catalina Flying Boat. As a result, water flying became Captain Traver's passion and to this day he still enjoys telling stories about water flying to the Travers' family.
After the war, Bob Travers wanted to stay in aviation, so he started brokering aircraft. In the late 1940s, he became the largest Mooney dealer in the Midwest. After that, he became a captain for Ozark Airlines, carrying passengers in the DC3. He retired in 1950 from the airline to focus on his blossoming aviation insurance agency.
The company grew steadily and in 1982 Travers and Associates bought the first of 10 aviation insurance agencies across the country. The agency now employs over 25 agents and has held contracts with all the premier aviation insurance companies since 1950. This growth and can-do attitude has helped the company grow into one of the largest aircraft insurance agencies in the industry.
By creating a viable insurance agency, Bob Travers created a legacy for his children and grandchildren. The business is now spearheaded by Glen Travers, Bob's son, and his grandchildren Chris, John and Mike.
Travers and Associates' commitment to their customers needs was never clearer than in 1983, three members of the Travers family were traveling to Dover, Delaware on business in a pressurized 58 Baron. The aircraft crashed into trees, and its passengers were severely injured. Fortunately, all six onboard survived and made full recoveries.
"This accident was a tremendous learning opportunity and shaped who we are today," said Chris Travers. "Because of it, we have firsthand experience of the tragedy our customers face in the event of a loss; we aren't just selling insurance policies. We are your advocate in your time of need. You have to experience tragedy to truly understand the value of your aviation insurance. We dedicate every day to making sure that our pilots and their families are protected so that in case the unfortunate happens, they have nothing to worry about."
